Keeping Emergency Money In Our Home
I read on another message board about how this one lady keeps $200 in her home for emergencies such as Natural disasters etc......It had me thinking and I wondered why I had never thought of that. We have our change jar of course and I have taken pride with having $500 for a "fast cash emergency" with our regular bank which I cannot use a debit card for but I can transfer it to our chequeing or savings account by using the internet or phone.
Now I am thinking, what if the power goes out, phone lines are down or the ATM machines do not work etc..., even being able to transfer from a phone would be meaningless.
Sooooooooo this is what I am going to do, I do not work very often but I do get called to go into work evry now and again, I have been asked to work this coming week for Tuesday,Wednesday and Thursday and I will take that money earned and keep a $50 and some smaller bills "Hidden" lol in our home for that "Just In Case" event should it occur.
How many here keep emergency fund money in their homes for that "Just In Case" event?

I used to keep around $100 on hand but haven't in the last few years. Thanks for mentioning it, I'm going to get some cash in the house.

RE: Keeping Emergency Money In Our Home
I have money in the house, as I save each week in various pots for various things.
HOWEVER............we had an attempted break-in at the house a couple weeks ago, so that made me think about the money we do have in the house. We have put an alarm system in but even so. Is it wise to keep money in the house, that's a debatable question?

I worry about break-ins too, so I come up with some pretty weird hiding spots.

Applyby that is a Good point! How Scary for you and your Family!
We have a house alarm which came with the house , but I don't even know how to use it, dh does though.
I have a few ideas on where to hide the money, although, I don't think I will keep a big amount around.

I have read, that some suggest that you have two hiding spots, one a relatively easy one to find, and other a little harder. The idea being that a thief wants to get in and out as soon as possible, the sooner he finds the smaller "stash", the less likely he is to toss your entire place looking for stuff.

RE: Keeping Emergency Money In Our Home
I believe that keeping emergency money in the house is good. We really don't know what will happen tomorrow or the next day, at least we are prepared in case something occurred. How much is too much is what I do not know. Maybe just enough to get you going somewhere or enough to buy emergency foods or medicines. But not too much because keeping them in the bank has more benefits.
